Understanding Expanded Text Ads

Like most people, you probably see a huge number of text ads every day, in the normal course of searching for information online. Text ads are served up alongside conventional search engine results.
Many customers will be willing to click on text ads even if they detest most advertising. This is because the point of text ads is to answer a call being made by customers who are looking for a particular type of product or service.

Expanded Text Ads Basics

With expanded text ads from Google, you can now have two headline fields and each can be as long as 30 characters. This is followed by up to 80 characters of text that serve as an expanded description.

The display URL will use the domain of your final URL.  AdWords obtains the domain of your final URL and shows it to searchers. As Google puts it, “if your final URL is www.example.com/outdoor/hiking/shoes, your ad’s display URL will show as www.example.com.”

Transition Begins October 26

Traditional text ads will be available on the Google Display Network as well as the Google Search Network until October 26, 2016, the date when Google transitions to expanded text ads.

Accordingly, you should meet with your marketing team well ahead of the transition date so you can start planning new expanded text ad ideas and test them out.

Google recommends that you start from scratch and compose expanded text ads as a single message instead of simply tacking on a second headline to your older standard text ads.

While you won’t be able to create or edit standard text ads after the October transition, Google says it will continue to run existing standard text ads on its network, with no cutoff date listed.

Google set up expanded text ads so that they will display properly on all types and sizes of screens, from desktop computers to mobile devices. If you are accustomed to standard text ads, be aware that expanded text ads will not support the Device Preference setting, as it is no longer needed.

If your company has yet to explore using text ads but you are anxious to begin testing this system to reach motivated shoppers who are already searching for what you have to offer, now is a great time to begin with expanded text ads.

Don’t have the time or resources to give expanded text ads your full attention? Not to worry.
